Improve air quality in the office: tips for employers

A healthy work environment starts with good air quality. Good air quality is crucial for the health and productivity of employees. Here, you’ll learn why it matters, what the legal requirements are, and how you, as an employer, can improve air quality in the office.

Why air quality matters

Air quality refers to how “clean” the air we breathe is. This includes factors such as nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter. Poor air quality can lead to health issues like allergies, fatigue, and respiratory problems. Especially in offices, where employees spend a large part of their week, it is essential to maintain good air quality.

Air quality and the Dutch Working Conditions Act (Arbowet)

Outdoor air quality often differs from that inside the office. According to the Dutch Working Conditions Act (Arbowet), employers are required to provide a safe working environment, including “clean” air. This means that office air must meet certain health standards. Regular monitoring and improvement of air quality are therefore not only beneficial for employees’ health but also a legal obligation.

Improving air quality as an employer

There are several ways employers can improve office air quality:

  • 1. Effective ventilation system: Ensure a properly functioning ventilation system. Regular checks and maintenance, such as replacing filters and cleaning ducts, are essential to keep the air fresh.

  • 2. Separate printer room: Printers producing more than 5,000 prints per month should be placed in a separate room. This prevents harmful substances from spreading throughout the workspace.

  • 3. Cleaning and storage: Invest in closed cabinets and floors that are easy to clean. This helps keep the space dust-free and contributes to cleaner air.

  • 4. Green design and plants: Plants can significantly improve air quality. They convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and absorb harmful substances, contributing to a healthier work environment. Integrating plants into the office a concept known as biophilic design, can also enhance the atmosphere and employee well-being.

Invest in good air quality in the office

Improving air quality as an employer is an investment in your employees’ health and productivity. By complying with the legal requirements of the Arbowet and investing in both technology and natural elements, you create a work environment where employees feel well and can perform at their best. This makes the office not just a place to work, but also a place where people feel at home.
