What is ergonomic working?
Ergonomic working is about creating balance within the workplace. It focuses on adapting workspaces to meet the needs of employees. You might immediately think of an ergonomic office chair, but that is just one part—there’s much more that contributes to a truly ergonomic work environment.
Why practice ergonomic working?
First and foremost, for the health of employees. Imagine a workplace where staff don’t suffer from back pain after a long day of sitting. How much better would that be? Ergonomic adjustments can reduce or even prevent aches and discomfort, leading to less absenteeism.
Second, for comfort and well-being. Think of a workspace where everyone truly feels at ease. No more struggling with an uncomfortable chair or a desk set at the wrong height. Ergonomic adaptations make the office a place where people enjoy spending their time.
And let’s not forget productivity. When employees feel comfortable and free from pain, their concentration improves significantly. This means more work gets done in less time.
How to work ergonomically
Let’s start with desks. Make sure desks are set at the correct height. This allows arms to rest comfortably on the surface without raising the shoulders. Position screens at eye level so everyone can view them in the correct posture, helping to prevent stiff necks. Ensure that everyone can sit upright, with proper back support from an ergonomic office chair.
Creating awareness about standing and movement is also very important. Encourage people working in the office to stand and move around regularly throughout the day.
Finally, consider natural light. A bit of sunlight can really boost mood, but make sure it doesn’t shine directly into your colleagues’ faces. The layout of desks in the office is therefore crucial—have a conversation with your team about the best arrangement.
